Derwent Innovation is a proprietary patent research application that provides trusted patent data and tools to monitor technology trends and competitive landscapes, inform FTO opinions, prosecute patents, monetize and license assets and support litigation activities. It provides access to Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI), a curated patent database with editorially curated titles and abstracts, special subject matter classification coding and indexing, and proprietary patent invention-centric family building. Also includes the Derwent Patent Citation Index (DPCI) which indexes backwards and forwards patent and literature citations. DWPI and DPCI are integrated with the full text of patents from a number of patent authorities, including translations for major authorities such as China, Korea and Japan, enabling users to navigate via the DWPI value add through to the associated patent full text. Derwent Innovation uses AI to drive "Smart Search" technology to assist novelty and FTO searches, "Optimized Assignee" with Ultimate Parent to reveal current patent assignees and ultimate ownership, and legal status predictions.

DWPI Class and Manual Codes
Patent classification codes based on CPC is available from the introduction of that classification system (includes all backfile updates as provided by the patent offices). ECLA codes are retained in records from the discontinuation of that system, and can be used in historical searches. Historical USPC codes are also retained prior to 2015. Both CPC and USPC appear during the transition period of March 2013 through 2015. IPC and CPC codes are kept fully up to date with new classifications schemas, and through regualr reclassification updates via the patent offices.
The CPC classes are in separate fields corresponding to status: original for data issued at the time of publication (usually data extracted from the direct weekly data feed from the patent office and the CPC allocated by the national patent offices, CPCNO) and current for the most up to date version of the CPC for that record (usually data extracted from main exchange bibliographic file from the EPO or US reclassification feed). Users can also search via CPC Combination Code - useful for searching certain technologies such as laminates.
The Japanese classification system applied by examiners in the Japanese patent office - F terms (file forming) and FI (file index) is fully searchable in Derwent Innovation - across the full text and DWPI records.

There are Standardised Assignee Names each provided with a DWPI Patent Assignee Codes (PACO) to address name variants and group parents with subsidiaries. Patent publications relating to the same invention are grouped together in the DWPI patent family, to include also non convention equivalents and Chinese dual filings, therefore providing a more compersive view of the invention.

Human indexers group patent documents into Derwent families based on priorities and related content, thereby de-duplicating the searching effort while ensuring that no distantly related patents are accidentally lumped together in a single family. DWPI families also include non-Convention patents deemed by human indexers to be part of the same family, and also Chinese dual filings - where a patent application and utility model can be filed on the same day, but published days, weeks or months apart with no indication on the records to link them together. Derwent Innovation also includes INPADOC family data, and offers AI derived DWPI and INPADOC family legal status.
