A Minesoft family is similar to the EPO DOCDB definition of a simple family which is a collection of patent documents that are considered to cover a single invention with identical technical content. The parent applications that start the family tree will be the parents of all family members – with the exception that continuation-in-part applications always start a new simple family.

An Extended Family is a collection of patent documents that cover a technology. The technical content covered by the applications in one extended patent family is similar but not necessarily the same. Patent applications that are members of an extended patent family will all have at least one priority in common with at least one of the other members – either directly or indirectly.

Automate manual patent checks by setting up a Watch Patent alert to receive a notification each time there is a change in legal events for a patent. It is possible to select which legal events to monitor. Alternatively, set up a Query Alert to receive notifications when new patents match the search strategy. Query alerts are based on search queries that use the same search language as a regular Origin search.

Relevant records can be saved in a results folder for future use, to share, or for further analysis.

Private or shared folders can be created and records can easily be added in bulk from a search result set or individually added when viewing records. Records added to the folder are up-to-date, meaning if new information has been added to the record that has already been saved in a results folder, this information will automatically be updated and displayed within the record.

Manage and capture interesting patents using your own company-defined set of custom fields. For example, it can be useful to categorise patent records by technical area, product name, importance, etc. Comments can also be added to records to share patent findings within your organisation and encourage collaboration, streamlining the IP workflow process. Once records have been tagged with custom fields they can be searched and displayed in the results and record view for any user with the right permissions.

Custom fields include the following functionalities:

- Creating custom field schemes and assigning permission rights (admin only)
- Creating custom fields (admin only)
- Searching custom fields (query builder and command line)
- Viewing custom fields in the results and record view
