IPLoRD – Intellectual Property Longitudinal Research Dataset – is a publicly available dataset that provides researchers with an applicant activity-centric view of Australian IP right filings.
It is the annual snapshot on the stocks and flows of intellectual property (IP) rights for over 360,000 Australian and over 250,000 international applicants in the last 20 years. IPLORD systematically transforms the application information in IPGOD into derived data items to track each applicant’s IP activity over time. IPLORD can be integrated with the tax registry of Australian businesses (BLADE) by the ABS to link IP activities to business performance.
A detailed data dictionary is available with the data download. The dataset is also partitioned to facilitate access.
IPLORD provides researchers with an applicant activity-centric view of Australian IP right filings. IPLoRD leverages IPGOD (Intellectual Property Government Open Data) data to provide a history of an applicant’s filings over time broken down by financial year. Where available, the ABN (Australian Business Number) of the applicant is provided to allow linkage with other government research datasets.
IPLoRD makes it possible for economists and other researchers to examine relationships between the filer’s economic circumstances and their intellectual property portfolio. IPLoRD is a biennial release. This year’s version of IPLoRD provides coverage of filing activities from 1904 to the end of 2020.
IPLORD also includes longitudinal information about patents, designs, trademarks and plant breeder’s rights.
